Midwife in village can approach an integrity service in pregnancy checking, screening to malaria and treatment in remote area and malaria endemic. Therefore midwife has a big role in controlling malaria especially occurred on pregnant woman, said DG of Disease Control and Environmental Health, Ministry of Health, Prof. Dr. Tjandra Yoga Aditama, in opening of Malaria International Meeting (MIP) or (Malaria in Pregnancy) at Bali, on February 24, 2010. MIP working group is a group of some experts which are malaria endemic country in the world such as Africa Region, Asia Pacific Region.


Indonesia today has been implementing integrated activity of “malaria treatment and preventing on pregnant woman in malaria endemic province by conducting some training for midwives in province/district/municipality. The trained midwife were midwife at health center and village so that they were able to do screening by using RDT in the first ANC (Ante Natal Care) visit, the using of ACT (Artemisnin Combination Therapy) – malaria anti drugs and the using of insecticide mosquito net”, said by Prof. Tjandra.

“This integrated activity  to support the achievement of MDG’s target number 4-5  is decreasing Infant and Maternal Mortality Rate to realizing Indonesia free of Malaria”, said by Prof. Tjandra Yoga.

According to DG of DC & EH , malaria still become a health problem in community in many countries, especially in Africa area. Every year there are 300-500 million of people who were infected by malaria. From that number, about 1.5-2 million were dead, more than half were pregnant woman, infant and underfive. While in Indonesia there were 95.000 pregnant woman infected by malaria (IDHS, 2001)

The meeting that was occurred until February 27, was attended by Expert of Maternal Health from WHO Center (Geneva), Indonesia WHO, RBM (Roll Back Malaria) Geneva, Unicef, MPS (Make Pregnancy Safer) Geneva, MIP JHPIEGO, RAOPAG/Africa, MIPESA/Tanzania, ACT Malaria, Cambodia, Brazil, Solomon, Thailand, Kenya, Mozambique, PNG, and also participants from some Universities of Notredame, USA, Queensland (Australia).

Some participants from Indonesia are hospitals in Papua (Abepura, Timika), NTT, POGI, IBI, Eijkman and other related units of Ministry of Health such as Directorate Maternal Health, Directorate of Children Health, Directorate of Vector Borne and Health Research and Development Board.

This meeting discussed about: The latest malaria information during pregnancy in Asia-Pacific and Africa area, some obstacles and treatment in develop malaria control during pregnancy, strengthen corporation between malaria and reproductive health program and also international and national partnership.

The meeting also discussed about experiences changing among countries about treatment, malaria during pregnancy prevention, prevention for pregnant woman by using insecticide net mosquito, malaria- anti drugs. In addition it also discussed about conducted corporation between malaria control and reproductive health program, research and international organization/community.


DG of Disease Control & Environmental Health, Ministry of Health hoped that this meeting will give an important contribution for malaria control in the world.
