“I clearly support RI initiative to establish WHO Collaborating Centre Influenza in Indonesia, and will give aid to realize it,” said WHO Director General, Dr. Margaret Chan, in her meeting with Health Minister of RI, dr. Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, MPH, Dr. PH broke through WHO 126th Executive Board in Geneva, Swiss on January 18, 2010.

This support of WHO Director General is very meaningful in Indonesia’s efforts for developing countries to have adequate facilities. The facilities are important to diagnose and implement risk-assessment to pandemic-potential diseases, such as H5N1 and H1N1.

Furthermore, WHO Director General also supports the establishment of WHO Collaborating Centre for Disaster Management in Indonesia. Today, 9 centers for Disaster Management (Regional Center for Crisis Response) have been available, that are in North Sumatera, South Sumatera, DKI Jakarta, Central Java, East Java, Bali, South Kalimantan, South Sulawesi and North Sulawesi, and 2 sub regional in West Sumatera and Papua. The Director praises capacity of Indonesia in disaster management that it can be a training center for other countries.

The bilateral meeting between Health Minister of RI and WHO Director General is one of activities during the 1st day of WHO 126th Executive Board that would be held until January 23, 2010. Health Minister of RI also had bilateral meetings with Health Minister of India and Brunei Darussalam to discuss efforts to strengthen the bilateral cooperation on health.

WHO Executive Board is composed of 34 WHO member states, including Indonesia. Health Minister of RI has been chosen as one of vice chairman, together with South Korea, Oman and Paraguay. This year, the Executive Board, which is led by Uganda, commits to make decision and policy that would be discussed and defined by World Health Assembly (WHA), and give suggestion to WHO Director General in implementing WHA results.

In this Board, Indonesia keeps fighting for the continuity of the formation of Virus Sharing and Benefits Sharing Frameworks, and initiates proposing resolution draft on “the Improvement of Health through Safe and Environmentally Sound Waste Management”. This proposal is one effort to follow up the result of “Bali Declaration on Waste Management for Human Health and Livelihood” agreed on 9th COP to the Basel Convention in Bali, on June 2008.
